Description

The University of Toronto Tolkien Club has spent the past few months organizing our first annual Beowulf reading. The poem will be read in full in a combination of the original Old English and in multiple translations.

Please join us at noon for an introduction, with readings to begin at 12:30 pm, continuing until the poem is complete. All levels and stations at the university are welcome, and Modern English captions are provided during the parts of the performance that are not in Modern English.

Interested participants can sign up to read sections of the poem in Old English or any other translation, with volunteers to be asked to read any unclaimed sections on the day of the performance. Creativity and variety are encouraged for the readings, and any dramatic or musical additions are highly encouraged, though not required. Make sure to sign up for multiple time slots! NB: The line numbers are based on the Old English side in the Seamus Heaney translation, ISBN 0-393-32097-9.

We will provide some limited food and beverages, however you are welcome to bring either for yourself or for the group. We will be using this event as the pilot event for the Literary Performance Working Group, which is dedicated to the informal performance of verse and drama from a wide range of cultures and periods.
