Students may elect to complete a thesis to fulfill the program requirements for the MA in Medieval Studies. The thesis meets 1.0FCE for the program. An MA thesis is 12-15,000 words in length (including footnotes/endnotes but excluding bibliography and any appendices). The thesis must be double-spaced and continuously paginated. It may be divided into chapters or sections, but it must have an identifiable introduction and conclusion. It must also include a properly formatted bibliography. Other relevant formatting guidelines can be found on the SGS website. Students may select the most appropriate citation system in consultation with their thesis supervisor.
While students are normally registered in the thesis course during the summer semester, they are encouraged to begin work on the thesis in the fall semester. The standard timeline is the following:
By November 15, the student must complete the MA Thesis Declaration Form and submit it to the Graduate Administrator by email. That form provides space to declare the name of the thesis supervisor as well as a 500-word abstract. The form must be accompanied by a properly formatted bibliography. The abstract will be formally approved by the CMS Executive before the winter break.
By March 1, the student must submit the name of a second reader for the thesis to the Graduate Administrator. If the student is unable to identify a second reader, the CMS Associate Director will appoint one.
The thesis must be submitted no later than August 1. The thesis is to be submitted electronically as a PDF file to the Graduate Administrator, who will distribute it to the supervisor and the second reader. Those two faculty members must submit their grade and comments to the Graduate Administrator by September 1. The Graduate Administrator will then share the comments with the student and post the grade on ROSI.
A thesis that has been assigned a passing grade must be uploaded on T-Space by September 15 before the student can qualify for graduation.
