External Latin Certification

Students external to the University of Toronto, by August 16, 2024, must:

  1. Complete the External Latin Application Form by indicating the name and address of a faculty member willing to ensure that the proper procedures are observed in person, and send it to gradadm.medieval@utoronto.ca prior to the deadline; and
  2. Pay an exam fee of $50.00 (CAD) for Canadian residents or its equivalent in US dollars for non-Canadian residents (see below). Please be aware that your registration as an external student will only be valid once the exam fee has been paid.

St. Michael's College Students

The Latin Committee agrees to mark as internal the examinations of upper-level undergraduate students in the Mediaeval Studies programme at St. Michael’s College. For more details, see Medieval Latin Exams.

Dates and Times

Examinations at both Levels I and II are set twice yearly. For dates, please see the exam schedule.

Examination Procedures

Please refer to the general provisions for Medieval Latin Exams. The examiners for externally marked exams will make use of the rubrics, but do not follow the assessment procedures and those grades are not evaluated or received by the Latin Committee (although the external examiners report to the Chair of the Latin Committee).

Notification of Results

Notification of results will be sent out as soon as possible, directly to the candidate and also (if requested) to the candidate’s university department. In the case of successful candidates, we will issue a `Statement of Proficiency’ indicating the level of competence, as described above. In the case of unsuccessful candidates, we may be able to indicate major areas needing attention: scripts will be returned, so that the candidate may (and we strongly advise this) go over the examination with a qualified Latinist. We regret that we cannot entertain appeals or enter into discussions of individual papers.
