Talia Zajac Reads Dante in Ukrainian

April 19, 2021 by Communications

The latest release from the Toronto Salutes Dante project features Dr. Talia Zajac, a CMS alumna and current Mellon fellow at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies. You can listen below as Dr. Zajac reads canto 8 of the Inferno in Ukrainian.

In an interview after the reading, Dr. Zajac explains that she chose to read the canto in Ukrainian in honour of her grandparents, who immigrated to Canada. Of the three existing Ukrainian translations of the Inferno, the reading is from the most recent, made by Ehven Drobyazko in 1967 in the Soviet Union. Dr. Zajac notes that the translation preserves the rhyme and musicality of the original and is also accessible online.
