Biography

I was born in Williamston, Michigan, but grew up in the Great Smoky Mountains of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I earned my BA in Medieval Studies and Latin with a concentration in linguistics from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota. I later moved to Toronto to complete my MA in Medieval Studies here at the Centre for Medieval Studies. My current research interests are in the Insular Brut traditions of Ireland, Wales, and Iceland and their relation to the more normative models produced by the Anglo-Norman world in both Middle English and Latin. I am intrigued particularly by notions of genre, shared narrative space, and the (im)mutability of narratives in the process of translation and adaption. I am also interested in the Europeanization of the more peripheral countries of Norway, Iceland, Wales, Ireland, etc. through the production of the genres of Brut and Romance and how cultures acquire legitimacy through the adaptation and personalization (or lack thereof) of these genres.
